Techniques Taught


The information provided in my customized workshops and trainings are drawn from the work of Kathleen Adams and the research of James Pennebaker and other professionals in the fields of psychology, education, business and spirituality. When paired with my own experience, research, and expressive writing techniques developed over twenty years as a journaler and ten years as an expressive writing facilitator, I can provide tips and guidance that will help you in all areas of your life.



The full Journal to the Self workshop is a 12-hour course on how to keep a journal for personal growth, creative expression and life enrichment. It was created in 1985 by Kathleen Adams LPC, PTR, Director of the Center for Journal Therapy, Inc., and internationally known pioneer and expert in the power of writing to heal. The early years of the workshop formed the research base for Kathleen Adams’ best-selling book, Journal to the Self, published by Warner Books in 1990. Tens of thousands of people have learned this easy, effective, empowering model of journal keeping through the Journal to the Self method. The workshop is adaptable – content and time-wise – to nearly any population, from children to seniors, and many special interest group.

The Tool Box: 22 Techniques

The Journal to the Self workshop is based on the book of the same name by Kathleen Adams and teaches 22 journaling techniques allowing you to “discover the writer within, learn life management skills, and tap into creative problem-solving.”

While I design and customize all my own workshops to fit the population and subject matter at hand, many of the writing exercises are based on the following techniques:

While some of these names are self-explanatory, others sound mysterious, don’t they? (And you’ll have to attend a workshop to learn all about them!) But each technique holds it own unique ability to access a part of your brain and subconscious. You will learn to use one or a combination of them to help you solve certain problems, heal different inner wounds, and have some creative fun (and maybe experience a little bit of magic too!).
